Neyyar Dam and Wildlife Sanctuary

Distance from City Center – 29 km

Things to Do – Built-in 1958, Neyyar Dam, is a part of the Neyyar wildlife sanctuary and located on the foothills of the Western Ghats. The charming lake-cum-dam is the perfect spot for a picnic to relax amidst the beautiful nature. There are boating facilities available in the lake from where you can get a glimpse of the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary houses sambar deer, sloth bear, Asian elephant, leopard, lion, tiger, and Nilgiri Tahr, to name a few. The Crocodile Farm, Lion Safari Park, and Deer Park are a treat for children and adults alike.

 Timings – The Neyyar Dam is open 24 hours, but the Wildlife Sanctuary is open from 9 am to 4 pm. 

Anantha Padmanabha Temple

Distance from City Center – 2 km

Things to Do – Anantha Padmanabha temple is one of the most famous Hindu temples in India that is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple is said to be built 5000 years ago even though its actual origin is still a mystery. The temple is one out of the total of 108 Divyadesams of Lord Vishnu and is among the best tourist places in Trivandrum.  The main temple is embellished in gold covering and is made in Kerala and Dravidian style. Inside the temple, Lord Padmanabha, one of the avatars of Lord Vishnu, is laid in a reclined position on the serpent Anantha. The temple is only open to Hindu followers and has a strict dress code that needs to be adhered to.   

Timings – Open from 3:15 am to 4:15 am, 6:30 am to 7:00 am and 8:30 am to 9:15 am for darshan in the morning.  In the evening, the main temple is open from 5:00 pm to 6:15 pm and from 6:45 pm to 7:20 pm.

Napier Museum

Distance from City Center – 3.5 km 

Things to Do – Napier Museum is named after Lord John Napier, the former Governor-General of Madras. Built-in 1855 by the maharaja of Travancore, it is an architectural marvel, made in the gothic style. The museum is located right inside the Zoological garden compound. The museum houses some of the unique historical idols, ornaments, artifacts, and even a chariot that are perfectly preserved here. There is also a Chitra Art Gallery that has a rare collection of paintings by famous artists Raja Ravi Varma, Roerich, and others. It also has paintings from the Mughals, Rajputs, and Tanjore schools of painting. You’ll also find paintings brought in from Bali, China, Japan, and Tibet. 

Timings – Open 10 am to 4:45 pm. 1 pm to 5 pm on Wednesday and on Public Holidays. Monday closed.

Magic Planet

Distance from City Center – 28 km

Things to Do – Magic Planet is a newly developed theme park that is known for the amazing amusement rides, edutainment shows, and other attractions within the complex. Visitors can enjoy different shows like rope magic, illusion show, mind fusion, and more. There are also thrilling performances by cartoon characters, acrobats and artists. It is one of the most fun and entertaining tourist places in Trivandrum to visit with family and friends. 

Timings – Open from 10 am to 5 pm. Closed on Monday.

Kannakakkunu Palace

Distance from City Center – 4 km 

Things to Do – Kannakakkunu Palace is among the most beautiful palaces in Kerala and is loved by the locals and the tourists alike. It was built in the 19th century, during the rule of Sri Moolam Thirunal. The palace boasts of some unique architectural designs that use red façades and traditional roof patterns that are not seen in modern homes. The parks surrounding the palace are also well-maintained. 

Timings – Open all days of the week from 10 am to 5 pm, except Monday.
